About Vitra

VitrA began in 1942 as a small ceramic workshop in Kartal, Istanbul, making tableware with eight employees. It turned to washbasins and toilets after the war, became the first Turkish manufacturer of ceramic sanitaryware in 1958, and took the name VitrA in 1966 – chosen by a vote of its own staff. Brassware followed in the late eighties and tiles in the nineties, all from the Bozuyuk campus that is still the company’s heart.

Today VitrA describes itself as the only brand offering every component of the bathroom, and for once that is close to literal: ceramics, furniture, brassware, shower systems, frames and concealed cisterns, mirrors, accessories and tiles, across fourteen ranges and more than a thousand items. It is the flagship brand of the Eczacibasi Group, and it has bought its way into European design as well – Engers Keramik in 2006, Villeroy & Boch’s tile division in 2007 and the German furniture maker Burgbad in 2008. The Liquid range is by Tom Dixon.

On guarantees VitrA is strongest where it matters most: twenty-five years on acrylic baths, ten on ceramics and brassware, and ten on concealed cisterns and frames – backed by a promise to supply spare parts for thirty years, which for a cistern buried in a wall is the guarantee that actually counts. Furniture and mirrors are covered for two years; the full table is below. VitrA is on display in Swansea.
